Artist Statement

Jackie Avery is a painter who lives and works in Portland, OR.

People say that my paintings are like little scenes from a larger story. Often viewers spontaneously invent story lines to go with them, or relate them to their own lives. This always makes me happy because it’s my goal to spark imagination, not to strictly illustrate a particular story.

I’m drawn to quirky photographs and old books as visual resources. I often find these at garage sales, and have quite a stash!

The paintings are acrylic on wood ‘boxes’, (unless noted,) and are painted around the edges, ready to hang. Each painting is sealed with my favorite varnish for extra luminosity and protection.

I do accept commissions; prices are based on size and complexity of the subject, and are similar to the prices you see listed on my ‘currently available’ page. For custom work, I usually work from your photographs, allow 4-6 weeks for completion. Email me if you’re interested!
